Mastering the Envelope Publisher Tool in SOLIDWORKS

Mastering the Envelope Publisher Tool in SOLIDWORKS
  • Jul 14,2025

In the world of CAD design, efficiency and collaboration are key factors in ensuring a seamless workflow. SOLIDWORKS offers various tools to enhance design productivity, and one such powerful feature is the Envelope Publisher Tool. This tool is a game-changer for users working with large assemblies, multi-body parts, and collaborative projects.

What is the Envelope Publisher Tool?

  • The Envelope Publisher Tool in SOLIDWORKS allows designers to create envelope components in one assembly and use them as reference geometry in another. This feature is particularly useful in complex assemblies where specific components need to be referenced without affecting performance.

  • An envelope is a simplified version of a part or subassembly used only for reference. It does not participate in mass calculations, BOM (Bill of Materials), or interference detection, making it an excellent tool for streamlining design workflows.

Benefits of Using the Envelope Publisher Tool

  1. Improved Assembly Performance: Since envelopes are lightweight reference models, they reduce computational load, improving assembly responsiveness.
  2. Better Collaboration: Designers can share reference geometry between different assemblies without importing unnecessary data.
  3. Enhanced Design Flexibility: Easily position parts with respect to envelope geometry without affecting the main assembly structure.
  4. Reduced Errors: Ensures accurate part placement and alignment by referencing envelopes instead of duplicating components.

SOLIDWORKS Envelope Mode

What is Envelope Mode?

SOLIDWORKS Envelope Mode dramatically improves Top-Down Design performance. Envelopes are used in assemblies as reference components and selection tools. Envelope parts or assemblies are ignored in the bill of materials and mass properties.

Note: Separate Envelope parts are a solid volume, not shelled.

Common Uses of Envelopes

  • Defining keep-out areas or volumes
  • Designing around envelopes for size, position, and mates
  • Creating selection sets for configurations from different sub-assemblies

Enhancing visibility control in assemblies.

How to Use the Envelope Publisher Tool in SOLIDWORKS

Using the Envelope Publisher Tool is simple and intuitive. Follow these steps to integrate it into your workflow:

Step 1: Open the Source Assembly

  • Open the assembly that contains the components you want to use as envelopes.

Step 2: Activate the Envelope Publisher

  • Right-click on a part or subassembly in the Feature Manager Design Tree and select Component Properties.

  • Set it as an Envelope at the bottom right corner.

  • Notice that when you set it to Envelope, the Exclude from Bill of Materials option is set by default, and the icon in the Feature Manager Design Tree changes.

Step 3: Selecting Components Within an Envelope

To select all components inside an envelope:

  • Right-click the envelope part and choose Envelope

  • Select from two options:
    • Select Using Envelope > Show/Hide Using Envelope

  • These options allow you to hide/show models that fall inside or outside the envelope.

Step 4: Envelopes in Drawings

By default, Envelope components are hidden in SOLIDWORKS drawings. To show them

1. Right-click the drawing view

2. Go to View Properties > Show Envelope

Envelope Mode Settings

You can customize envelope behaviour under Tools > Options:

Best Practices for Using Envelope Publisher

  • Use Envelopes for Guiding Layouts:
    • Instead of copying parts, use envelopes to maintain design intent while keeping assemblies lightweight.
  • Leverage Envelope Visibility Settings:
    • Toggle visibility of envelopes in the feature tree to declutter your workspace.
  • Combine with Large Assembly Mode:
    • Using envelopes along with Large Assembly Mode can significantly improve performance in complex projects.
  • Keep Envelope References Updated:
    • If the source geometry changes, ensure that the envelope updates accordingly in the target assembly.

Conclusion

The Envelope Publisher Tool in SOLIDWORKS is an essential feature for designers handling complex assemblies. By enabling reference geometry sharing without performance drawbacks, it optimizes workflows and enhances collaboration. Whether you are working in a team or managing large assemblies, mastering this tool can significantly improve your design efficiency.
